091d738c72 Convert all categories and modules into static lists
Remove the complicated mechanism that could be (in theory) used by
external libraries to register new categories and modules with
statically defined lists in <isc/log.h>. This is similar to what we
have done for <isc/result.h> result codes. All the libraries are now
internal to BIND 9, so we don't need to provide a mechanism to register
extra categories and modules.

f8812d4184 Do not lock workers when using -T transferslowly/transferstuck
This commit ensures that worker threads are not sleeping (by using
select()) when '-T transferslowly/transferstuck' test options are
used. This commit converts synchronous implementation of the code into
an asynchronous one based on timers.

Change dns_message_create() function to accept memory pools
Instead of creating new memory pools for each new dns_message, change
dns_message_create() method to optionally accept externally created
dns_fixedname_t and dns_rdataset_t memory pools. This allows us to
preallocate the memory pools in ns_client and dns_resolver units for the
lifetime of dns_resolver_t and ns_clientmgr_t.

6105a7d360 convert TSIG keyring storage from RBT to hash table
since it is not necessary to find partial matches when looking
up names in a TSIG keyring, we can use a hash table instead of
an RBT to store them.

the tsigkey object now stores the key name as a dns_fixedname
rather than allocating memory for it.

the `name` parameter to dns_tsigkeyring_add() has been removed;
it was unneeded since the tsigkey object already contains a copy
of the name.

the opportunistic cleanup_ring() function has been removed;
it was only slowing down lookups.

Refactor the isc_quota code and fix the quota in TCP accept code
In e18541287231b721c9cdb7e492697a2a80fd83fc, the TCP accept quota code
became broken in a subtle way - the quota would get initialized on the
first accept for the server socket and then deleted from the server
socket, so it would never get applied again.

Properly fixing this required a bigger refactoring of the isc_quota API
code to make it much simpler. The new code decouples the ownership of
the quota and acquiring/releasing the quota limit.

After (during) the refactoring it became more clear that we need to use
the callback from the child side of the accepted connection, and not the
server side.

b171cacf4f Use a qp-trie for the zone table
This change makes the zone table lock-free for reads. Previously, the
zone table used a red-black tree, which is not thread safe, so the hot
read path acquired both the per-view mutex and the per-zonetable
rwlock. (The double locking was to fix to cleanup races on shutdown.)

One visible difference is that zones are not necessarily shut down
promptly: it depends on when the qp-trie garbage collector cleans up
the zone table. The `catz` system test checks several times that zones
have been deleted; the test now checks for zones to be removed from
the server configuration, instead of being fully shut down. The catz
test does not churn through enough zones to trigger a gc, so the zones
are not fully detached until the server exits.

After this change, it is still possible to improve the way we handle
changes to the zone table, for instance, batching changes, or better
compaction heuristics.

Refactor isc_time_now() to return time, and not result
The isc_time_now() and isc_time_now_hires() were used inconsistently
through the code - either with status check, or without status check,
or via TIME_NOW() macro with RUNTIME_CHECK() on failure.

Refactor the isc_time_now() and isc_time_now_hires() to always fail when
getting current time has failed, and return the isc_time_t value as
return value instead of passing the pointer to result in the argument.

a8f1d0c19c Compress zone transfers properly
After change 5995, zone transfers were using a small
compression context that only had space for the first
few dozen names in each message. They now use a large

Simplify and speed up DNS name compression
All we need for compression is a very small hash set of compression
offsets, because most of the information we need (the previously added
names) can be found in the message using the compression offsets.

This change combines dns_compress_find() and dns_compress_add() into
one function dns_compress_name() that both finds any existing suffix,
and adds any new prefix to the table. The old split led to performance
problems caused by duplicate names in the compression context.

Compression contexts are now either small or large, which the caller
chooses depending on the expected size of the message. There is no
dynamic resizing.

There is a behaviour change: compression now acts on all the labels in
each name, instead of just the last few.

A small benchmark suggests this is about 2x faster.

e37b782c1a DNS name compression does not depend on the EDNS version
There was a proposal in the late 1990s that it might, but it turned

20f0936cf2 Remove use of the inline keyword used as suggestion to compiler
Historically, the inline keyword was a strong suggestion to the compiler
that it should inline the function marked inline. As compilers became
better at optimising, this functionality has receded, and using inline
as a suggestion to inline a function is obsolete. The compiler will
happily ignore it and inline something else entirely if it finds that's
a better optimisation.

Therefore, remove all the occurences of the inline keyword with static
functions inside single compilation unit and leave the decision whether
to inline a function or not entirely on the compiler

NOTE: We keep the usage the inline keyword when the purpose is to change
the linkage behaviour.

584f0d7a7e Simplify way we tag unreachable code with only ISC_UNREACHABLE()
Previously, the unreachable code paths would have to be tagged with:

    ISC_UNREACHABLE();

There was also older parts of the code that used comment annotation:

Unify the handling of unreachable code paths to just use:

    UNREACHABLE();

The UNREACHABLE() macro now asserts when reached and also uses
__builtin_unreachable(); when such builtin is available in the compiler.

58bd26b6cf Update the copyright information in all files in the repository
This commit converts the license handling to adhere to the REUSE
specification. It specifically:

1. Adds used licnses to LICENSES/ directory

2. Add "isc" template for adding the copyright boilerplate

3. Changes all source files to include copyright and SPDX license
header, this includes all the C sources, documentation, zone files,
configuration files. There are notes in the doc/dev/copyrights file
on how to add correct headers to the new files.

4. Handle the rest that can't be modified via .reuse/dep5 file. The
binary (or otherwise unmodifiable) files could have license places
next to them in <foo>.license file, but this would lead to cluttered
repository and most of the files handled in the .reuse/dep5 file are
   system test files.

f7c82e406e Fix the isc_nm_closedown() to actually close the pending connections
1. The isc__nm_tcp_send() and isc__nm_tcp_read() was not checking

they always succeed. This applies to all protocols (UDP, TCP and

57b4dde974 change from isc_nmhandle_ref/unref to isc_nmhandle attach/detach
Attaching and detaching handle pointers will make it easier to
determine where and why reference counting errors have occurred.

A handle needs to be referenced more than once when multiple
asynchronous operations are in flight, so callers must now maintain
multiple handle pointers for each pending operation. For example,
ns_client objects now contain:

        - reqhandle: held while waiting for a request callback (query,
                        notify, update)
        - sendhandle: held while waiting for a send callback
        - fetchhandle: held while waiting for a recursive fetch to
                        complete
        - updatehandle: held while waiting for an update-forwarding
                        task to complete

control channel connection objects now contain:

        - readhandle: held while waiting for a read callback
        - sendhandle: held while waiting for a send callback
        - cmdhandle: held while an rndc command is running

httpd connections contain:

        - readhandle: held while waiting for a read callback
        - sendhandle: held while waiting for a send callback

the call initailizing a journal iterator can now optionally return
to the caller the size in bytes of an IXFR message (not including
DNS header overhead, signatures etc) containing the differences from
the beginning to the ending serial number.

this is calculated by scanning the journal transaction headers to
calculate the transfer size. since journal file records contain a length
field that is not included in IXFR messages, we subtract out the length
of those fields from the overall transaction length.

this necessitated adding an "RR count" field to the journal transaction
header, so we know how many length fields to subract. NOTE: this will
make existing journal files stop working!

53f0b6c34d convert ns_client and related objects to use netmgr
- ns__client_request() is now called by netmgr with an isc_nmhandle_t
parameter. The handle can then be permanently associated with an
  ns_client object.
- The task manager is paused so that isc_task events that may be
triggred during client processing will not fire until after the netmgr is
finished with it. Before any asynchronous event, the client MUST
call isc_nmhandle_ref(client->handle), to prevent the client from
being reset and reused while waiting for an event to process. When
the asynchronous event is complete, isc_nmhandle_unref(client->handle)
must be called to ensure the handle can be reused later.
- reference counting of client objects is now handled in the nmhandle
object. when the handle references drop to zero, the client's "reset"
callback is used to free temporary resources and reiniialize it,
whereupon the handle (and associated client) is placed in the
"inactive handles" queue. when the sysstem is shutdown and the
handles are cleaned up, the client's "put" callback is called to free
  all remaining resources.
- because client allocation is no longer handled in the same way,
the '-T clienttest' option has now been removed and is no longer
  used by any system tests.
- the unit tests require wrapping the isc_nmhandle_unref() function;
when LD_WRAP is supported, that is used. otherwise we link a
libwrap.so interposer library and use that.
