fat-rwlock: New big but fast synchronization primitive. This implements a reader-writer lock that uses a lot of memory (128 to 192 bytes per thread that takes the lock) but avoids cache line bouncing when taking the read side. However, libopenvswitch is linked into nearly all openvswitch executables making it hardly possible to run openvswitch on embedded devices (for example running OpenWrt). Convert openvswitch to use libtool for building its internal libs. This allows "--enable-shared" and "--enable-static" as configure arguments. Default is "--disable-shared" thus keeping the current behavior with the only change that static libs are installed by "make install". Since the openvswitch library interfaces are internal and thus not stable (yet) encode the openvswitch version into the library name: libopenvswitch-2.0.90.so Binary size is reduced to around 1/3 when using shared libs. bfd: Implement Bidirectional Forwarding Detection. Traditionally, Open vSwitch has used a variant of 802.1ag "CFM" for interface liveness detection. This has served us well until now, but has several serious drawbacks which have steadily become more inconvenient. First, the 802.1ag standard does not implement several useful features forcing us to (optionally) break compatibility. Second, 802.1.ag is not particularly popular outside of carrier grade networking equipment. Third, 802.1ag is simply quite awkward. In an effort to solve the aforementioned problems, this patch implements BFD which is ubiquitous, well designed, straight forward, and implements required features in a standard way. The initial cut of the protocol focuses on getting the basics of the specification correct, leaving performance optimizations, and advanced features as future work. netdev: Globally track port status changes Previously, we tracked status changes for ofports on a per-device basis. Each time in the main thread's loop, we would inspect every ofport to determine whether the status had changed for corresponding devices. This patch replaces the per-netdev change_seq with a global 'struct seq' which tracks status change for all ports. In the average case where ports are not constantly going up or down, this allows us to check the sequence once per main loop and not poll any ports. In the worst case, execution is expected to be similar to how it is currently. In a test environment of 5000 internal ports and 50 tunnel ports with bfd, this reduces average CPU usage of the main thread from about 40% to about 35%. guarded-list: New data structure for thread-safe queue. We already had queues that were suitable for replacement by this data structure, and I intend to add another one later on. flow_miss_batch_ofproto_destroyed() did not work well with the guarded-list structure (it required either adding a lot more functions or breaking the abstraction) so I changed the caller to just use udpif_revalidate(). Checking reval_seq at the end of handle_miss_upcalls() also didn't work well with the abstraction, so I decided that since this was a corner case anyway it would be acceptable to just drop those in flow_miss_batch_next(). hash: Replace primary hash functions by murmurhash. murmurhash is faster than Jenkins and slightly higher quality, so switch to it for hashing words. The best timings I got for hashing for data lengths of the following numbers of 32-bit words, in seconds per 1,000,000,000 hashes, were: words murmurhash Jenkins hash ----- ---------- ------------ 1 8.4 10.4 2 10.3 10.3 3 11.2 10.7 4 12.6 18.0 5 13.9 18.3 6 15.2 18.7 In other words, murmurhash outperforms Jenkins for all input lengths other than exactly 3 32-bit words (12 bytes). (It's understandable that Jenkins would have a best case at 12 bytes, because Jenkins works in 12-byte chunks.) Even in the case where Jenkins is faster, it's only by 5%. On average within this data set, murmurhash is 15% faster, and for 4-word input it is 30% faster. We retain Jenkins for flow_hash_symmetric_l4() and flow_hash_fields(), which are cases where the hash value is exposed externally. This commit appears to improve "ovs-benchmark rate" results slightly by a few hundred connections per second (under 1%), when used with an NVP controller. Implement new "learn" action. There are a few loose ends here. First, learning actions cause too much flow revalidation. Upcoming commits will fix that problem. The following additional issues have not yet been addressed: * Resource limits: nothing yet limits the maximum number of flows that can be learned. It is possible to exhaust all system memory. * Age reporting: there is no way to find out how soon a learned table entry is due to be evicted. To try this action out, here's a recipe for a very simple-minded MAC learning switch. meta-flow: New library for working with fields by id. OVS already has a fairly good set of functions for working with fields that are known at compile time, but support for working with fields that are known only at runtime is fairly limited (and fairly unneeded). However, with NXM identifiers becoming more and more widely used throughout Nicira extensions, it's becoming corresponding more and more common to need to refer to fields at runtime. This new library represents a first attempt at a systematic approach for doing so.

Introduce ofpacts, an abstraction of OpenFlow actions. OpenFlow actions have always been somewhat awkward to handle. Moreover, over time we've started creating actions that require more complicated parsing. When we maintain those actions internally in their wire format, we end up parsing them multiple times, whenever we have to look at the set of actions. When we add support for OpenFlow 1.1 or later protocols, the situation will get worse, because these newer protocols support many of the same actions but with different representations. It becomes unrealistic to handle each protocol in its wire format. This commit adopts a new strategy, by converting OpenFlow actions into an internal form from the wire format when they are read, and converting them back to the wire format when flows are dumped. ofp-msgs: New approach to encoding and decoding OpenFlow headers. OpenFlow headers are not as uniform as they could be, with size, alignment, and numbering changes from one version to another and across varieties (e.g. ordinary messages vs. "stats" messages). Until now the Open vSwitch internal APIs haven't done a good job of abstracting those differences in header formats. This commit changes that; from this commit forward very little code actually needs to understand the header format or numbering. Instead, it can just encode or decode, or pull or put, the header using a more abstract API using the ofpraw_, ofptype_, and other APIs in the new ofp-msgs module. ovs-atomic: Use raw types, not structs, when locks are required. Until now, the GCC 4+ and pthreads implementations of atomics have used struct wrappers for their atomic types. This had the advantage of allowing a mutex to be wrapped in, in some cases, and of better type-checking by preventing stray uses of atomic variables other than through one of the atomic_*() functions or macros. However, the mutex meant that an atomic_destroy() function-like macro needed to be used. The struct wrapper also made it impossible to define new atomic types that were compatible with each other without using a typedef. For example, one could not simply define a macro like #define ATOMIC(TYPE) struct { TYPE value; } and then have two declarations like: ATOMIC(void *) x; ATOMIC(void *) y; and do anything with these objects that require type-compatibility, even "&x == &y", because the two structs are not compatible. One can do it through a typedef: typedef ATOMIC(void *) atomic_voidp; atomic_voidp x, y; but that is inconvenient, especially because of the need to invent a name for the type. This commit aims to ease the problem by getting rid of the wrapper structs in the cases where the atomic library used them. It gets rid of the mutexes, in the cases where they are still needed, by using a global array of mutexes instead. The bonding code in vswitch sends out gratuitous learning packets that are supposed to teach switches but not cause anything else to happen on the network. Add back 802.1D Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) library code. At one point, the OVS distribution contained an IEEE 802.1D Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) library written by Ben Pfaff and based on the 802.1D-1998 reference code. It was never integrated into ovs-vswitchd, so it was removed as part of commit ba18611 (Remove vestigial support for Spanning Tree Protocol.) This commit reintroduces the library, cleans up a few spots, and makes it build cleanly against new code. A future commit will have ovs-vswitchd use this library.

Add header for access to potentially unaligned data. I had been under the impression that "memcpy" was a valid way to copy unaligned data into an aligned location for access. But testing on SPARC has shown that GCC doesn't always honor that intention. It seems that, if GCC can see that there is a pointer of a type that requires alignment to a given object, then it will access it directly regardless of whether memcpy() is used to copy it. This commit adds a new header with functions to access unaligned data. I managed to come up with two techniques, one GCC-specific, one generic, that do avoid the misaligned access in my test case. The GCC-specific technique is the same one used by the Linux kernel (although no code has been literally copied). The other one seemed obvious but possibly slow depending on the compiler's ability to optimize. The following commit adds a user.

getrusage-windows: getrusage() for Windows. We use getrusage mainly to get user CPU time and system CPU time. Windows has a GetProcessTimes and GetThreadTimes that does the same job. So use them. We also use getrusage to get page faults. Use GetProcessMemoryInfo() for that. We also get number of context switches, block i/o times and use it for debug information when we wake up from poll_block late. I haven't found functions for that in Windows. We only use it for debug information, so it should be okay not implementing it. openvswitch: Use libtool and allow building shared libs Currently openvswitch builds all libraries static only. However, libopenvswitch is linked into nearly all openvswitch executables making it hardly possible to run openvswitch on embedded devices (for example running OpenWrt). Convert openvswitch to use libtool for building its internal libs. This allows "--enable-shared" and "--enable-static" as configure arguments. Default is "--disable-shared" thus keeping the current behavior with the only change that static libs are installed by "make install". We were distributing lib/dirs.c, which doesn't make sense, but in any case it created a race between "make" and "make dist" in updating lib/dirs.c, which showed up in the Debian package build (which runs build-indep and build-arch in parallel). Also, clean lib/dhparams.c. This should fix the failure seen in build openvswitch843.

coverage: Make ovs-appctl command more useful and less alarming. I've had a few complaints that ovs-vswitchd logs its coverage counters at WARN level, but this is mainly wrong: ovs-vswitchd only logs coverage counters at WARN level when the "coverage/log" command is used through ovs-appctl. This was even documented. The reason to log at such a high level was to make it fairly certain that these messages specifically requested by the admin would not be filtered out before making it to the log. But it's even better if the admin just gets the coverage counters as a reply to the ovs-appctl command. So that is what this commit does. Fix manpage-check on RHEL 5. The version of groff on RHEL 5 doesn't include the .SY, .OP, or .YS macros that ovs-benchmark.1 uses, so the manpage-check target fails on that platform. This commit adds the groff definitions of those macros to a file and includes it into ovs-benchmark.1. I tested that this allows RHEL 5 to pass manpage-check.

Use PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE=yes for invoking Python for build or test. An upcoming commit will break the ovs.vlog module into an ovs.vlog package with submodules. This commit makes switching between trees with the old structure and those with the new structure much easier. This commit works by setting PYTHONDONTWRITEBYTECODE=yes in Python invocations from the build system and testing. This keeps Python 2.6+ from creating .pyc and .pyo files. Creating .py[co] works OK for any given version of Open vSwitch, but it causes trouble if you switch from a version with foo/__init__.py into an (older) version with plain foo.py, since foo/__init__.pyc will cause Python to ignore foo.py. ofp-msgs: New approach to encoding and decoding OpenFlow headers. OpenFlow headers are not as uniform as they could be, with size, alignment, and numbering changes from one version to another and across varieties (e.g. ordinary messages vs. "stats" messages). Until now the Open vSwitch internal APIs haven't done a good job of abstracting those differences in header formats. This commit changes that; from this commit forward very little code actually needs to understand the header format or numbering. Instead, it can just encode or decode, or pull or put, the header using a more abstract API using the ofpraw_, ofptype_, and other APIs in the new ofp-msgs module. Implement initial Python bindings for Open vSwitch database. These initial bindings pass a few hundred of the corresponding tests for C implementations of various bits of the Open vSwitch library API. The poorest part of them is actually the Python IDL interface in ovs.db.idl, which has not received enough attention yet. It appears to work, but it doesn't yet support writes (transactions) and it is difficult to use. I hope to improve it as it becomes clear what semantics Python applications actually want from an IDL.
